The Story Behind Roots Landscapes & Trees

My passion for plants took root at a remarkably young age. At 12, I was already cultivating and selling delphiniums at local markets. By 15, I was deeply immersed in the world of gardening, working for a local garden designer and cycling between various gardening jobs, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. At 16, I took a significant step towards my horticultural journey by moving to London to study Horticulture and Landscaping at Capel Manor, a renowned horticultural college. This was followed by further studies in Garden Design at Falmouth University. This early start set the stage for a lifelong commitment to helping people build and care for their gardens and trees, a commitment that has now brought me to the picturesque village of Braunton, nestled in the inspiring landscape of North Devon.

From a young age, I have always been fascinated by plants and gardening—spending hours in the garden with both my grandparents. Growing up in rural Mid-Wales allowed me to explore and spend time in nature. This has had a lasting impact on how I view and interact with nature.

Winning Gold at the UK World Skills Landscaping Awards was a test of precision, skill, and craftsmanship. Over the course of two days, we built a garden exactly to plan, with every detail scrutinised for quality and accuracy. With just a 5mm tolerance, there was no room for error—every cut, placement, and finish had to be perfect. This experience with Hannes underscored the crucial role of teamwork in our field, and it taught me the importance of attention to detail and efficient working methods.

My work on both small and large-scale landscape projects has been a privilege, allowing me to collaborate with inspiring experts who share their knowledge, creativity, and passion for horticulture. Seeing how people connect with these spaces has reinforced my belief that landscapes enrich lives, create lasting memories, and bring people closer to nature.

Design & Building Bespoke Gardens.

  • Award-Winning Craftsmanship – Hannes and I won the World Skills Championship UK and received an award from the Worshipful Society of Gardeners. We had the chance to meet famous designers who inspired me with stories of plants and people.
  • Formal Training in Design & Arboriculture – I studied Garden Design at Falmouth University and trained later trained in arboriculture, developing expertise in trees, plants, and sustainable landscapes.
  • Nursery Connections – Working at one of the UK’s largest tree nurseries gave me a deep understanding of plant selection and large-scale horticulture. I have mainted strong relationships with the team at Dingle Nurseries Ltd and they provide large trees for my projects.
  • Latest technology & Software

Jack fully embraces technology, and uses throughout the design process. Site surveying with a drone reduces the posibility of mistakes and speeds up data collection.

Using the latest architectural design software, Jack can show you exactly what your garden is going to look like in 3D from any angle. This is a game changer as you don't need to visualise your garden from plans or drawings. Seeing every detail of your design as a photo or a video is transformative.
